Dalla piazza a pianta triangolare si apre il selciato della via Gallica che raggiunge il fiume Bidente. Era l’antica via del Chiasso che partendo dal centro di Galeata, davanti al Palazzo del Podestà e alla croce viaria che segnava l’inizio della mulattiera che portava a Sant’Ellero, rappresentava il percorso più breve per raggiungere il fiume. Il toponimo “Chiasso” è probabilmente da associare al fiume per il rumore prodotto nei periodi di “piena”. Suggestiva anche l’ipotesi che fa derivare il nome Chiasso dal latino “classis” ossia quartiere militare, che in via ipotetica potrebbe essere in connessione con la presenza, poco a monte, della città romana di Mevaniola. Prima di giungere sulla sponda del fiume troviamo un lavatoio recentemente recuperato.

From the triangular square, the paved Via Gallica opens up and leads to the Bidente River. This was the ancient Via del Chiasso, which started from the center of Galeata, in front of the Palazzo del Podestà and the crossroads that marked the beginning of the mule track leading to Sant’Ellero, and was the shortest route to reach the river. The name “Chiasso” is probably associated with the river because of the noise it makes when it is in flood. Another interesting hypothesis is that the name Chiasso derives from the Latin “classis,” meaning military district, which could hypothetically be connected to the presence, a little further upstream, of the Roman city of Mevaniola. Before reaching the riverbank, we find a recently restored wash house.
